Staking ATOM from a noncustodial wallet
We always recommend using a hardware wallet, like a Ledger Nano. Trust Wallet is beautifully built, but you can’t connect Ledger to it and storing wallet keys offline is prudent self-custody. That’s a major drawback.

4. Click “Stake.” (see image below)
5. Trust wallet randomizes the validators that appear on your position staking page. Click the validator name to access the list of available validators. (see image below)
6. Scroll down the list to find us and then tap “Blocks United.”

7. Enter the number of ATOM tokens you would like to stake and then click “Continue.” (see image below)
8. Verify the details and then click “Confirm.”

11. The history window pops up to show you that the transaction is pending and you can see it says “history” at the top and highlighted in green down there at the bottom of the window. After a second or two the transaction will go through and that word “pending” will disappear and you did it!
If you are currently staking ATOM tokens with a different validator and would like to move tokens over to us and stake with Blocks United, you do not have to unbond or unstake your tokens. You can simply re-delegate and the process only takes a couple of seconds. We have a tutorial on how to switch validators.

We ALWAYS recommend using a hardware wallet, like a Ledger to keep your keys offline. It helps reduce the risk of losing your tokens to a hack. We then like connecting the Ledger to Cosmos-native wallets, Keplr, Leap, or Cosmostation. Keplr is our favorite.
The main risks when staking ATOM are illiquidity and your validator being slashed. Your staked tokens take 21 days to unbond if you decide to unstake them. Additionally, if your validator is offline for too long there is a minor slashing penalty of 0.01%. If your validator is dishonest or mismanages their keys the slashing penalty is 5% and they are then tombstoned and removed from the validator set. You would then need to redelegate to a new validator.
For a large cap token, ATOM pays one of the highest staking yields. As of May, 2024 the APY is over 13%. Staking yield fluctuates with inflation, the overall number of supply that is staked, network activity, validator commission and validator performance.

It takes 21 days to get your tokens back after unbonding, regardless of the wallet used.
